The muslim chaplaincy at rutgers

The Center For Islamic Life At Rutgers University (CILRU) is the sponsor of the Muslim Chaplaincy on campus. In addition to hiring a public university’s first full time paid Muslim Chaplain, CILRU has leased a 1,000 sq. ft. office on campus that includes the chaplain’s office, a conference room and a common room for students to meet and learn.
As our operating expenses have increased, we need your help to support these efforts. Please note that CILRU does not receive any financial support from Rutgers. Your much-needed donation will be used to support the operations as well as support our initiative to purchase a building on campus.

We are hoping to raise funds from alumni, parents, friends of Rutgers University as well as from Muslim institutions and corporations.

May Allah Almighty bless you and your family and may you benefit from sadaqa jariya – supporting the Islamic institution and knowledge that will benefit thousands and thousands inshallah!

CILRU is zakat eligible by the strictest definition of zakat eligibility!

CILRU is zakat eligible in both the strict opinion of what makes a cause zakat eligible and the open interpretation of what makes a cause/initiative zakat eligible. There are 8 causes that are zakat eligible according to the Qur’an in surah Tawbah ayah 60 (9:60). These are: the poor (low wealth), the needy (temporarily in need due to circumstance), those administering zakat, those who are working to reconcile the hearts of the believers, to free people from slavery, to those overburdened by debt, for the cause of God, to the traveler who cannot currently provide for themselves.

Some masajid and Islamic centers will say they are zakat eligible based on quality 7 which says that they are doing things for the cause of God (ie. education, providing a place for prayer, etc.), and that is an acceptable opinion to use zakat to run general masjid operations. Though some will say that this is not a valid use of zakat because it is stretching a bit from the specific categories.

CILRU however actually falls into the specific categories of zakat, like feeding the poor (we support the RU food pantry and food insecure students), heavily support the needy (mental health care, crisis managements, victim assistance, etc.), work to reconcile the hearts of the believers (constant convert support/dawah, and Muslims struggling with their faith), help those over burdened by debt (provide scholarships/ advocate for students getting scholarships and initiatives).

CILRU is zakat eligible by the strictest definition of zakat eligibility.
